When you first start your Pilates journey, it’s important that you go about things the right way in order to get the most from the experience. Here are our top 3 Pilates tips for beginners:
1. Find a good Pilates teacher
Rather than simply buying a DVD or downloading a work-out from the Internet, find yourself a really good Pilates teacher and join a beginners’ class.
A good teacher will show you what each exercise should look like and how it should be performed. They can also help you with any problems or queries you might have as you learn.
2. Be patient and don’t expect too much too soon
When you first start Pilates, it’s important to be realistic about what you can do. You teacher can help you decide on some realistic goals suited to your needs. Patient, regular practice of Pilates will gradually take you to your goals.
It’s important not to push yourself too hard in the early days. If you find an exercise is particularly painful, you should stop. Become aware of the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ pain. If you feel some ‘pain’ because your muscles are working then that’s okay or can be referred to as ‘good’ pain, so carry on with the exercise.
Stop immediately if you experience any other pain and tell you teacher. A good Pilates teacher will teach you ways of working that will prevent pain and injury. If you have a particular injury or issue, your teacher will be able to suggest exercises to combat this.
3. Take time out for Pilates
In a busy life, it’s important that you make time for you and taking time out for Pilates practice is a great way to do this. Attending a class is great as all you have to do is turn up and the rest is organised for you.
If you attend a weekly Pilates class then you may also wish to practice at home between classes. If you’re able to, then make physical space and set aside time, as well as making sure that you have a set Pilates routine.
A routine works well for several reasons:
- a routine is easy to remember and keeps you focused
- you can measure your progress within a routine
- a routine allows you to add to it as you progress and learn
You could choose three exercises for strength and three for mobility from your recent Pilates class. Dedicate time to doing these exercises properly each day, or as often as you’re able to. Take time out, don’t rush, enjoy the precision and feeling of actually slowing down…and remember to breathe!
Although it’s nice to have music in the background, aim for a relaxed, chilled-out vibe to match the routine you’ve chosen.
